An inexpensive chess set can sell for $20, but a handcrafted wooden set certified for the World Chess Championship costs $500. Much of the set’s value lies in just one piece: the knight. Each knight must be carved by hand to look exactly the same. Making this one piece takes two hours, and there are fewer than 10 people trained to carve knights for the championship chess sets. So, how are these chessmen made? And why are they so expensive?

Why Championship Chess Sets Are So Expensive | So Expensive
This seemed like a highschool student just saying things to fill a word count on an essay. A whopping 2 hours! wow! lol
I.
Wait $20 dollars for a plastic set? I got an wooden set for $5 this is messed up
"Some chessmen must be dyed black and dried for ten days"
Yes. About half of them one would think.
Gotta be the worst script for a yt video ever
I thought chess were made of marble pieces.
A machine could replace all of them pretty easily
Topppp
what up steven, i luv ur vids
Those artisans need to run away to another company that values them or to a different country
why would you call it a „champion set“ only because it is expensive? There are no „championship sets“ in my oppinion only „luxuary sets“. The quality of a chess set has nothing to do with the outcome of the match, it doesn’t matter at all. You could even play chess with different lego bricks or colored stones, still nobody should care about it in a professional game. i understand that there are champion basketballs for example as the quality of the ball (how it fell, how it bounces) affects the game. that is true for may sports. But calling unnecessary expensive wood figures „championship sets“ makes no sense to me
how does the king being 94mm going to make hikaru blunder checkmate
Answer: Because pretentious nerds will spend any amount of money as long as you slap an 'artisan + handmade' sticker on it.
I have played this game for 20 years and have never heard a piece referred to as a "chessman".
Train for 4 to 5 months ,what u talk is bull shit
: honey I got promoted at work. I'm on Knight's now I start in the morning
Confused noises
Ngl, way over hyped. It not that hard.
I refuse to succumb to this sales pitch.
I bet these people are able to put stickers on Lego perfectly
Glamoured slavery in action. You see that barn they work in?
I wonder what this knight guy sees from the 500 bucks
Why was I so happy that I could understand him and not some person speaking a different language
The look didn’t effect play at all
I think she breezed over the ONLY reason they cost so much. It’s because of the magnetic pieces at the bottom for the tv display and because the championship chess league is willing to pay that much. The cutters they used literally did most of the work for them.
Only 10 people can make them but make like $1.00 a day 😂
I sm happy with 5 doller plastic set as I don't know to play
2:28 That's a mane not a tail
where i can buy it
just get a machine to make it because machines are way better than humans
So they’re bullshitting you into buying $500 chess sets. I did wood work for a year i can probably make a descent looking chess set. It’s complete nonsense.
That one plastic set with champion standardized design complete with the tracker that only cost $100: Money down the drain eh?
As a chess player, its not that important.
In a purely mental sport like chess where only brains, concentration and knowledge of the game matter, even there women have their own leagues and the top 10 best women would never beat the top 10 of the best men
They are rightfully skilled artisans! Just so very unfortunate that they are not paid as such. They are paid far far less of their worth. So, who the hell is running off with that excessive price tags loaded on top of the products. It's a disgrace that the West and even their own kind is exploiting the poor of India – though skilled and very willing to earn money to support their families, they are very much exploited!
Bet I can 3d print them with wood filament for cents.

“I swear bro, I didn’t intentionally blunder my Queen, it was totally because the Queen was too short. I swear it bro!”
In all seriousness, this carries the energy of “He’s not hacking, he just has a really good gaming chair”
The current FIDE set is terrible; design mostly 'borrowed' from existing designs, and the knight looks like a buggered camel. Trust an architect to mess it up.
It had to be tough for those artissans trying to master crafting and meticulously detailing the knight in a championship chess set.
I carved a chess set in my early 20s from solid marble. It took me 3 years working periodically. Someone offered me $1500 for it. I just laughed. I am biased but it makes this championship chess set look like it was made by a 5 year old.
$500 cost by the looks of it they get $10 out of that. Astonishes me how we get played because of the value we believe an item has.
Man, so how are those championships checkers sets made?
When people think money is way more important than the sport
Hi..where and how to buy this set?
I love playing chess! I remember my buddy and I skipping school to play chess for hours at the park!
Fact: every $20 or below chess set has at least one deformed knight
Omg its Baljeet from Phineas and Ferb 2:02
you are paying for handmade not button pushed product this shit is quality not quanity this chess not chekers… litterly.
If you call the knight the horse youre not allowed to carve
You can buy this wooden chess for just 20 to 30 dollars in Pakistan bcz of very low wage rate… mostly worker earn only 1 to 2 dollars daily
This episode was especially fun to make after watching “The Queen’s Gambit”. One thing we didn’t have time to include is that the board alone for the full set (worth $500) costs $220. Thanks for watching this episode! What other expensive things do you think we should cover?
