  6. Chess was invented during the Gupta empire in Ancient India during 320 to 550 CE and this period is called the golden period of basic foundations of science, technology, astronomy, astrology, medical sciences, art and culture etc. From India, this game traveled to various other countries. But the irony is that the inventor of chess named Shuja when he showed his invention to king , king was so pleased that he asked Shuja to decide a reward for himself. Shuja never desired any reward but when the king persuaded , Shuja said, “Your majesty, I demand that all the 64 square bins be filled with the grains of rice as per my formulae.”

The formulae was simple, first day, please keep 1 grain of rice in the first square bin as a reward and I will come and take away. Next day, it should be 1 × 2 = 2 rice gains in the second square bin. Third day, it will be double of 2, means 4 rice gains and like this, the number of rice will become double.

    The king accepted.

Next day, Shuja came to the Court and before the entire court, king ordered 1 grain of rice to be rewarded to Shuja.

    Day # of rice grains

    Day2 grain 2

    Day 3 grains 4

    Day 4 grains 8

    Day 5 grains 16

    Day 6 grains 32

    Day 14 grains 16,384

    Day 15, grains 32,768

    Day 16, grains 65,536

    Thus two columns were over

    Day 17, grains 1,31,072

    Day 18, grains 2,62,144

    Day 19,grains 5,24,288

Day 26, 1200 kg of rice

(The final chess block would be 10^18 (1 followed by 19 zeros) )

And at this stage, king realized his mistake of granting a reward and he felt so humiliated as he knew, no one can fulfill this wish.

So Shuja was caught and hanged for putting the king in a humiliating situation.
