When playing chess with really young people, like your children, here is something you can do to handicap yourself to get down to an even playing field so that both you and your child can play at maximum capacity. During the setup of the game, only place out your pawns and king while your child places out all the pieces. You must now play the game with only those pieces. Once your child can beat you with that setup, then you slowly add in pieces with higher values. For example, the next game you add in a knight, then the next game: a bishop, and so on; ending with the queen as the last piece. This can be a great way to keep the game challenging for you as the adult while also giving the child a fighting chance. Not to mention the satisfaction they get when you place the queen on the board because their skill now matches or exceeds that of your own.

  14. I remember playing like this against my father… It felt really great forcing him to use more and more piece over time, though I never got him to add the queen (Even adding the queen and taking away a rook I couldn't win)

  15. I remember losing to my dad in a match where he didn't have the Queen. I felt so ashamed but now that I'm bigger I would love doing that with my small cousins

  16. Accualy this form of chess is best to teach good-ish players (2000 rating and below) who think they are some big shot some humility. When you think abaut it. The best of the best GMs have 2800-ish ratings, the worst players in the world have it close to 1000…so "big shot 1800 rating" player, like myself is closer to the worsr players than the best ones…but we still think we are great, cuz we can crush most people while drunk and blindfolded…and yea sure we can, but for the top we are NOTHING
